한문단 한문단이 깊어서 진도를 나가기 쉽지 않다. 내 주변인들은 이 책을 어찌 이리 빨리 읽은걸까, 이해가 되지 않을 정도로. 이 뒤에 이어지는 내용은, cowardice를 무턱대고 조장하면 악마들 입장에서 backfire할 수도 있다는 것이다. 인간의 마음은 참 복잡다단해서, 인간에게나 마귀에게나 단순한 문제가 아니다.

But hatred is best combined with Fear. Cowardice,

이런 문장들때문에 스크류테이프는 내가 제대로 이해한게 맞는지 다시한번 곱씹어 봐야한다. 악마가 쓰는 편지 형식이라 모든 명칭이 거꾸로 되어 있는듯 하지만, 여기서 나오는 virtue는 우리가 이해하는 덕목, 선을 뜻한다.

U.S. Gypsum v. U.S.

이 사건 납세의무자는 캐나다에서 천연석고(gypsum)를 바윗돌 상태로 사들이면서 중간에 저율과세 대상인 자회사(Export)를 끼워 넣었다. Export는 계열회사에서 석고를 사들여서 이를 모회사인 U.S, Gypsum에 재판매하는 계약을맺었다. 재판매가격은 Export의 톤당 매수가격에 일정 마진을 덧붙인 가격이다. 문제는 Export가 물건을 사들이면서 인도받는 장소가 항구의 부두이고 이 물건을 U.S. Gypsum에 인도해주는 장소가 부두에 대어놓은 배의 갑판이라는 것이다. Export가 소유권을 가지는 시간이란 물건이 부두에서 갑판으로 떨어져 내리는 그 순간뿐이다. 법원은 Export의 행위는 아무런 경제적 실질이 없고 그저 세금을 줄이자는 것뿐이며 독립기업 원칙에 따른다면 Export에 귀속했던 소득은U.S. Gypsum에 재할당(re-allocate) 해야 한다고 판시했다.

물고기는 존재하지 않는다

저자가 말하고자 하는 바에 어느 정도 동의하는 바이고, 반전이 있을거란 것도 알고 있었는데.. 독서경험이 썩 유쾌하지는 않다.

내가 기대한 반전은 꺾인 복도에 숨어 있다가 앞에서 ˝얍!˝하며 친구가 웃으며 튀어나오는, 그런 익살스러운 성격의 것이었다. 그런데 이 책이 선사한 반전은 알루미늄 야구배트로 뒤통수를 후려갈기는 정도의 충격이었다. 그것도 두대나 때리다니.

이번 경험으로 내가 어떤 전개방식을 좋아하는지 분명히 깨닫게 되었다. 추리하게끔 하는 반전, 나중에 답을 알게 되었을 때 ‘아! 그걸 왜 내가 몰랐지.‘하며 무릎을 탁 치게 하는 반전을 선호한다는 사실을 이번 기회에 자각했다.

9장에서 조단이 제인 스탠포드를 독살했다는 강한 의구심을 품으면서부터, 두번이나 강하게 낙하하는 기분을 맞이하니 마음 추스리는 게 힘들다. 그런데 논픽션이라서 저자한테 하소연할 수도 없다. 논픽션이면 사실 그대로 쓰는 것이 취지에 맞는데, 저자가 자신이 취재한 과정을 그대로 담아내겠다는데 내가 뭐라 그래. 그냥 내 취향을 이번 기회에 확인하는거지.

미국이 독일보다 먼저 우생학을 발전시키고 법제화했다는 사실을 알게 되어 의미는 있었다..


두줄평 : 이 책에서 가장 좋았던 부분은 첫 페이지였다. 그 호감이 잠시 유지되었다가 9장부터 미친듯이 실망
