As an idexical sign of an action of trauma that has already taken place, a stain might conjure inertia or, in the case of blood, even death, but Tuymans sees his painting as dynamic: "The image is more a pure abstraction, but at the same time there's an enormous amount of physicality in it. The drops are isolated and are constantly moving. When you hang this painting on the wall it grows." As if to illustrate this point, Tuymans repainted Bloodstains in 2007 on the ceiling at Troubleyn / Laboratorium, Antwerp, the last place we might expect to see a microscopic view.
Pictures, if they are to have an effect, must have the tremendous intensity of silence, a filled silence or void.
