2008년 동남아시아 학술 저널인 [SOJOURN]이 40주년을 기념해 선정한 "가장 영향력 있는 동남아시아 연구서 14"을 소개한다. 원래 10권을 꼽으려던 것이 중복추천된 책이 많아 14권이 된 듯하다.
1. Furnivall, J.S. Colonial Policy and Practice: A Comparative Study of Burma and Netherlands India. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1948. 초기 동남아시아학의 걸작. 영국식민지 관료였다가 사회주의자가 되어 신생 버마 정부에서 일한 저자 퍼니발의 인생 여정 또한 흥미로움. 특히 동남아 사회를 설명한 Plural Society라는 개념을 제시한 것으로 유명.
