It was October and the Indians on a remote
reservation asked their new chief if the coming
winter was going to be cold or mild.
Since he was a chief in a modern society he
had never been taught the old secrets.
Although he couldn't tell what the winter was
going to be like, to be on the safe side he told
his tribe that the winter was going to be cold and
that they should collect firewood.
Two weeks later he called the weather service and
asked, "Is the coming winter going to be cold?"
"It's going to be a very cold winter," the weatherman
responded. "How can you be so sure?" "The Indians are
collecting firewood like crazy," said the weatherman.

10월이 되자 머나먼 인디언 보호구역의 인디언들은
새로 뽑힌 추장에게 다가올 겨울이 추울 것인지 아니면
따뜻할 것인 지에 대해 물어보았다.
그 추장은 현대사회에서 살아왔으니 조상들로부터
날씨를 예측하는 데 대한 지혜를 배울 기회가 없었다.
그는 다가올 겨울 날씨가 어떨지 전혀 알 길이 없었지만
신중을 기하려고 부족민들에게 "이번 겨울에 혹한이 올
것이니 땔나무를 많이 장만하라"고 명령했다.
2주후 추장은 궁금해서 기상대에 전화를 걸어
"올 겨울 날씨가 추울까요?"라고 물어보았다.
기상대는 "이번 겨울에는 강추위가 올겁니다"라고 했다.
인디언 추장이 다시 물었다:
"아니, 어떻게 그렇게 장담할 수 있어요?"
기상대의 답: "최근에 보호구역내의 인디언들이 미친듯이
땔나무를 장만하는데 혈안인 걸 보면 추위가 올 것이 분명하지요"
