마법의 저녁 식사 ㅣ 세계의 걸작 그림책 지크 53

이 책을 보니 마루벌 출판사의 질 베르 삼촌이라는 책이 생각납니다.두 책이 다 그림이 독특한 책이라서요. 이 책 진짜 신기하고 재미있어요. 달리와 마그리트라는 두 화가의 그림, 분위기를 만끽할 수 있는 책입니다. 너무 재미있어요. 피에르가 얼마나 정신없고 신기한 하루를 보냈을지 상상이 됩니다. 그러나 피에르는 행복한 아이라는 생각이 들어요. 돌처럼 반응없는 부모님보다 피에르를 더 잘 이해해 줄 분들이 계시니까요. 그것만도 다행아닐까요? 하루 종일 놀다온 피에르가 2층으로 올라가는 장면, 좀 마음 아팠어요. 왜냐구요? 보시면 압니다. ^^
참, 저는 그리 신경을 쓰지 않았던 부분인데요, 알라디너 책숲님꼐서 코멘트를 달아 주셨더라구요. 그림을 보다 보면요, 마치 암호처럼 낙관처럼 Kevin is Pierre라는 문장이 나옵니다. 양탄자 테두리에, 정원수에, 접시에, 현관문 위의 장식에, 접시 무늬까지요. 저는 아들이겠거니 생각하고 넘어갔는데 책숲님 말씀을 들으니 궁금해지더라구요.
그래서 미국 야후에 들어가서 Michael Garland를 찾아보니 이 분의 홈페이지가 있어요. 아래 글을 보시면 아이 셋이 있는데 이름이 케이트, 앨리스, 캐빈이라고 나와 있네요. 이 책 말고 다른 책을 본다면 아마 또 다른 아이의 이름이 씌여 있는 책을 만나볼 수 있지 않을까 싶습니다. 혹시 제 영어 실력이 짧아 다른 분을 찾아 놓은 것이라면 얼렁 지적해 주셔욤~! ^^
Michael Garland
I was born on Thirty-fourth Street in Manhattan. My parents were from Queens. They married when my Dad returned from World War II and joined the ranks of the NYPD. A sister and two brothers rounded out my family. When our Stuyvesant Town apartment grew too small, we moved to the relative wilds of Staten Island.
I spent my childhood roaming the woods, playing sports, crossing the street without looking both ways and drawing. Drawing was the thing I did best. I wasn't the smartest one in my class or the best athlete in any sport, but when they passed out the paper and crayons, it was my day to shine. My teachers would never hold up my math test and proudly display it to the rest of the class, but everything I drew would be shown to the class and given a place of honor on the bulletin board. I started to think I might become an artist.
After high school, I went Pratt Institute to study art. I cleaned the floors in a nursing home and drove a cab nights and weekends. Soon after graduating, I sold my first illustration to True Confessions magazine. I was on my way; the beginning of a thirty-year career of illustrated everything you could imagine.
Along the route I was married to Peggy and we had three children, Katie, Alice and Kevin. Two are in college and one is on the way (please buy my books!). We live in Putnam County, New York.
Sixteen years ago, I decided I wanted to be a writer as well as an artist. Sixteen published books later, I'm still at it.
