나는 그런 감상적인 생각을 얼른 머릿속에서 지우고 ‘변화는 자연의 선물’ 이라는 아우렐리우스의 격언을 떠올렸다. 할리우드 사람들사이에서 널리 통하는 격언이었다. 내가 아는 할리우드 사람들은 대개 목표로 하는 자리에 오르기 위해 자기 어머니라도 기꺼이 팔았을사람들이었다. 버튼 하나만 누르면 블라인드가 자동으로 걷히며 짙푸른 카리브해의 아침 바다를 볼 수 있는 곳, 수화기만 들면 집사가 원하는 걸 모두 다 가져다주는 이곳에서 나는 할리우드에서의 내 위치를확고하게 지키고 싶다는 마음이 간절했다.
