너는 가난으로부터 왔다, 남쪽의 집에서,
추위와 지진의 험악한 풍경으로부터, 그리고
그게 우리에게-그 신들이 무너져 굴러

너는 검은 흙으로 빚은 작은 말, 검은

예술가의 정체성-반 브룩의 인터뷰(전시회 도록에서)

'정체성'에 대해 생각할 때 내가 제일 먼저 떠올리는 것은 '에고(Ego)'적 측면이다. 왜냐하면 에고이스틱한 인간이야말로 내가 가장 원치 않는 인간형이기 때문이다. 이기심은 언제나 종국에 가서 인간을 파멸로 이끈다. 그러나 이른바 '스타 시스템'이 존재하는 디자인계에서 이기적인 인간이 되지 않기 위해 스스로 다잡는 것은 결코 쉬운 일이 아니다. 당신이 점점 더 유명해지게 되면 그만큼 당신은 사람들에게 더 많은 영향을 미치게 될 것이다. 그때 당신은 자신에게 주어진 그 큰 영향력을 잘못 사용하는 일이 없도록 조심해야 한다.

예전에 나는 내가 하는 작업이 나의 정체성을 형성한다고 생각했다. 그러나 이 생각은 곧바로 또다른 질문을 낳게 되었는데, 이는 "정말로 그래픽 디자인을 통해 세상을 바꾸는 것이 가능하다고 생각하는가?"라는 질문이었다. 나는 디자인 작업을 하면서 그 누구보다도 많이 이 질문에 대해 생각해왔다. 그리고 그 답으로 단호히 "No!"라고 말하곤 했다. 맨 처음 이같은 결론에 도달했을 때, 나는 정말로 두려운 생각이 들었다. 언제나 나는 "내 작업이 곧 내 인생이다"라고 말해왔는데, 내가 하는 일이 세상을 바꾸는 데 기여하지 못한다면 나의 존재는 무의미하다는 것인가? 그럼에도 불구하고 이 디자이너라는 직업을 계속 수행해야 하는가?

그러나 나는 디자인에 대한 사랑을 표현하는 내 방식이 잘못되었다는 사실을 깨닫게 되었다. 나는 책임감을 부정하고 있었던 것이다. 사실은 "내 작업이 곧 내 삶이다"가 아니라, 거꾸로 "내 삶이 바로 내 작업이다"라고 했어야 옳았다. 왜냐하면 일상의 활동과 디자인을 분리시키는 것은 불가능하기 때문이다. 디자인 철학은 먼저 훌륭한 인간이 되는 것에서 출발해야 한다. 이는 디자인의 경우에만 적용되는 것이 아니다. 이런 식으로 생각하게 되면 모든 문제들이 매우 단순 명쾌해진다.
