일요일 낮에 나쓰메 소세키의 풀베게를 샀다. 아직 다 읽지 못했는데 그만 집에
놔두고 왔다. 첫부분이 인상적이었는데 인용하지 못함을 용서하길. 이 부분과
무관하게 수첩에 옮겨 적어놓은, 주인공이 인용한 시가 있어 옮긴다. 누구의 것인지
출처는 밝혀져 있지 않았다.

Sadder than is the moon's lost light
Lost ere the kindling of dawn
To travellers journeying on,
THe shutting of thy fair face from my sight

출처가 궁금하여 뒤져보니 조지 메레디쓰의 THE SHAVING OF SHAGPAT에 등장하는
누군가가 읊은 시다. 원래의 것은 아래와 같다.

    Sadder than is the moon's lost light,
    Lost ere the kindling of dawn,
    To travellers journeying on,

    The shutting of thy fair face from my sight.
    Might I look on thee in death,
    With bliss I would yield my breath.

    Oh! what warrior dies
    With heaven in his eyes?
    O Bhanavar! too rich a prize!
    The life of my nostrils art thou,
    The balm-dew on my brow;

    Thou art the perfume I meet as I speed o'er the plains,
    The strength of my arms, the blood of my veins.
