■ 작품 소개

<<죽음의 집>>은 도스토옙스키가 1860년에 발표한 소설입니다. 도스토옙스키는 페트라셰브스키 사건(제정 러시아 시대에 사회주의를 연구하던 지식인들이 반역음모로 체포되어 사형선고를 받은 사건)에 연루되어 처형 직전에 황제의 명으로 시베리아 형무소로 보내집니다. <<죽음의 집>>은 이러한 경험을 바탕으로 창작된 자전적 소설입니다. 화자인 페트로비치 고르얀치코프는 아내를 살해한 죄로 십년의 강제노역형을 받고 시베리아로 보내집니다. 시베리아의 죄수들은 대부분 소작농 출신으로 지식인 계층인 페트로비치에게 시베리아 생활은 너무나 고통스러운 일입니다. 하지만 그는 서서히 역경을 극복하고 상황을 받아들이게 됩니다.
