1948년 역시 12월은 빙 크로스비가 예약을 해 둔터라 남아 있는 1위 자리는 3주만 있었는데, 바로 그 자리를 차지한 것은 의외로 Theme Songs 이라는 Columbia에서 발매한 편집앨범이었습니다. 소위 Big Band 하나하나를 대표적으로 상징하는 음악을 Band Theme Song 이라고 칭했는데,  이 중 8곡을 모아 하나의 음반으로 기획한 컨셉으로, 당대에만 가능했었던 참신한 기획 덕분이랄까 당당히 빌보드 앨범차트 1위에 3주간 행크됩니다.

하지만 워낙에 희귀음반이라 CD버전 역시 나온 것이 없어서 아쉽네요. 그냥 넘어가기도 아쉽고 해서 당시 미국의 Big Band Theme Songs 리스트를 정리해 둔 것이 있어 자료삼아 올려 봅니다.

1947년 35주간 1위를 차지한 1집에 이어서 1948년에는 Al Jolson Souvenir Album Volume III가 발매가 되면서 14주간이라는 놀라운 기간동안 빌보드 앨범차트 1위를 차지하게 됩니다. 알 졸슨의 이 Souvenir Album 시리즈는 향후 6집까지 발매가 되며 계속된 인기를 누리게 되니, 참으로 대단한 시리즈라 할 수 있겠네요. (2집은 1949년에 발매, 위 자켓사진은 1집 것 차용하였으며 알 졸슨의 이야기는 이전 글 참조)

현재 구매가 가능한 CD 버전으로는 2004년 5월 Universal UK에서 2CD로 발매된 Let Me Sing and I'm Happy 라는 앨범이 제격인 것 같습니다. 40년대 중반에서 50년까지 알 졸슨의 베스트 앨범성격의 편집인데, 전작인 Souvenir Album 1집의 수록곡 8곡을 모두 수록하고 있으며, Souvenir Album 3집의 경우도 6번 트랙을 제외한 나머지 7곡을 모두 담고 있어서 최선의 선택으로 보여 소개합니다.

화려한 자켓사진이 이 앨범은 1948년 5/29~7/17까지 8주간 빌보드 앨범차트 1위를 차지한 Stan Kenton의 A Presentation of Progressive Jazz(1947년 Capitol 78rpm 4레코드세트로 발매) 입니다. 피아니스트이자 작곡자, 교육가로, 또한 자신의 독창적이고도 혁신적인 재즈 오케스트라를 이끈 리더였던 그는 progressive jazz 장르를 개척한 선구자로 재즈 전성시대에서도 정상에 있던 아티스트였습니다. 이 앨범의 성공을 필두로 이후 수 많은 앨범들이 그의 디스코그라피를 장식하게 됩니다.

현재 CD버전으로 나온 것을 찾아보니 2001년 Proper Box UK 레이블로 발매되었던 4CD의 Stan Kenton Story [Box set]이 가장 근접한 것 같아 소개해 봅니다. 4CD의 베스트앨범격인 이 음반에는 4번째 CD에 오리지널 8곡 중에서 6, 8번 곡을 제외한 나머지 6곡이 포함되어 있어 아쉬운대로 명반의 채취를 잘 느낄 수 있게 해주며 가격도 염가판이라 상당히 저렴한 편이네요.

1946년에 빌보드 앨범차트 1위를 차지했었던 Carmen Cavallaro는 1948년 5월22일 다시 1주간 1위에 오르는 기염을 토합니다. 당시 Decca에서는 연도별 아티스트별 베스트앨범을 기획하여 수십 타이틀의 Songs of Our Times 라는 시리즈를 동시에 발매했었는데, 이중에서 유일하게 Carmen Cavallaro의 1932년 베스트 앨범이 빌보드 1위를 차지하게 됩니다. (위 사진은 1950년 재발매된 DL-5176 LP버전입니다.)

3살부터 피아노를 연주한 신동이자 피아노의 시인으로 불리는 그는 타고난 재능을 바탕으로 1920년대부터 클래식 넘버에서 재즈에 이르기 까지 아름다운 작품들을 많이 녹음하게 되는데, 이중 1932년의 베스트 송 모음집인 위 앨범은 안타깝게도 아직 CD로 복각된 것이 없기에 CD버전 추천은 생략합니다..

1948년 5월15일 빌보드 앨범차트 1위에 번개처럼 깜짝 히트를 기록한 앨범은 The Three Suns의 Busy Fingers 입니다(위 사진은 52년 LP버전이나 자켓사진은 동일). 1939년 Artie Dunn (vocals, electric organ), Al Nevins (guitar), Morty Nevins (accordion) 3명의 오리지널 멤버로 결성되어 활동한 The Three Suns는 4백만장의 판매고를 올린 싱글 Twilight Time의 히트로 널리 알려졌고, 1947년 미국에서 가장 많이 팔린 싱글로 기록된 Peg O' My Heart의 빅 히트로 정상급 뮤지션을 자리를 지켰는데, 이러한 인지도에 뒷받침으로 인해 1948년에 발표한 위 앨범 역시 정상을 무난하게 기록하게 됩니다.

현재 The Three Suns의 CD버전은 여러 종의 베스트 앨범만이 판매될 뿐 위 앨범의 복각판은 아직 출시가 되지 않은 상태여서 아쉽네요, 언젠가 재발매되는 날을 고대하며 별도의 추천CD는 략하도록 하겠습니다.
