Benny Goodman - 1937-1938 Jazz Concert No.2 (1952, Columbia SL-180)
스위의 제왕 베니 굿맨의 새로운 앨범이 1952년에서 1953년에 걸쳐 빌보드 앨범차트 1위에 8주간 랭크되면서 여전한 그의 인기를 다시 한번 확인하게 됩니다. Columbia에서 일련의 베스트 앨범의 컨셉으로 발매하던 시리즈의 하나로 1937년에서 1938년 사이에 녹음된 그의 공연실황 중 17곡을 선별하여 발매한 앨범으로 베니 굿맨의 1938년 카네기홀 앨범과 함께 꼭 기억할 만한 음반으로 남게 됩니다.
워낙 녹음의 정리가 안되던 1930년~40년대 활동하던 그 인지라, 후대에 발매되는 음반들도 오리지널 복각에서부터 편집음반까지 중구난방 어지럽기 짝이 없기는 하나, 그 와중에서도 이 소중한 앨범을 잘 복원해준 CD가 있어 소개해 봅니다. 1993년 4월 6일 Sony Columbia/Legacy (48836)에서 "On the Air 1937-1938" 이라는 2CD 모음집을 발매하게 되는데, 바로 이 음반에 본 LP 수록곡이 고스란히 담겨 있었네요. 원래의 수록곡 17개는 물론, 동 기간 녹음된 곡들을 모아 총 49트랙을 담는 성의를 보인 음반으로, CD 발매 당시에도 상당히 화제가 되었다고 합니다. 국내에서 수입유통된 적이 있어서 구하기는 쉬울 듯하며 좋은 기획, 좋은 명반으로 추천해 봅니다.
