1952년 상반기 빌보드 앨범차트 1위를 강타한 앨범은 MGM의 영화 파리의 아메리카인 사운드트랙입니다. 빈센트 미넬리 감독, 진 켈리, 레슬리 카론, 오스카 레번, 조지 게터리, 니나 포크 주연의 이 영화는 미국 현대음악의 거장 조지 거쉰이 작곡하고 그의 동생이 작사한 서정적이고도 아름다운 명작 음악을 바탕으로한 뮤지컬 극영화로, 대단한 흥행기록을 기록하면서 아카데미 6관왕을 차지한 명작영화입니다.
워낙 조지 거쉰 이라는 엄청난 작곡가와의 작품이기에 영화 제작시 이미 사운드트랙 제작이 동시에 진행이 되었고, 앨범은 발매하면서 무려 16주간 1위라는 대기록을 작성하며 I Got Rhythm 등 수많은 히트넘버들을 배출하게 됩니다. 특히 김연아의 피겨연기에 배경음악으로 사용된 거쉰 - 피아노 협주곡 F장조도 이 영화에 함께 소개되었던 곡입니다.
현재 CD버전으로는 1996년 Rhino 레이블에서 발매된 것이 단연 최선호 앨범으로 손꼽힙니다. 가격이 다소 센 것이 흠이라면 흠이지만, 2장의 CD에 꽉 채운 47트랙에서는 오리지널 LP 수록곡들은 물론, 영화 삽입곡 및 outtake곡들까지 1950년 7월부터 1951년 4월까지 녹음된 MGM의 음원들을 모두 찾아서 수록한 소중한 기록입니다. 마침 국내에서도 판매를 하고 있으니 금상첨화로, 소개합니다.
