My mother prepared for our reunions in her own way, mari-nating short rib two days before my arrival. She filled the fridgewith my favorite side dishes and bought my favorite radish kimchiweeks in advance, leaving it out on the counter for a day so it wasextra fermented and tart by the time I got home.

Karen O made music feel more accessible, made me believe it was possible that someone like me could one day make something that meant something to other people.

The reason Gramps cried when he carried Graminto the house was that there, in the center of thebedroom, stood his own parents‘ bed-the bed thatGramps and each of his brothers had been born in, the bed his parents had always slept in. This waswhere his father and brothers had disappeared toduring the wedding supper. They had been movingthe bed into Gram and Gramps‘s new house. At thefoot of the bed, wiggling and slurping, was Sadie, Gramps‘s old beagle dog.
