The moon had just arisen, and it softened the beauty of the old college buildings, mellowed the harshness of time, casting shadow pools beneath the cloisteresque arches to the west and setting out the ivy in stronger relief upon the ancient walls. The barred shadow on the lichened stones beyond the elm was cast by the hidden gate; and straight ahead, where, between a quaint chimney-stack and a bartizan, a triangular patch of blue showed like spangled velvet, lay the Thames. It was from there the cooling breeze came.

색스 로머(Sax Rohmer, 1883~1959)는 영국의 소설가로 전업작가로 데뷔하기 전에는 공무원으로 일했습니다. 시인이자 작사가, 희극 작가 등을 활동하다 ‘색스 로머‘라는 필명과 함께 미스터리 작가로 확고히 자리 잡았습니다. 교활하며 음흉하며 신비한 능력을 가진 동양인 악당의 전형 ‘닥터 푸만추‘를 창조하여 선풍적인 인기를 모았습니다.
