■ 작품 소개

국내에서 <<벤허>>는 1959년 윌리엄 와일러 감독이 만든 영화로 유명해졌지만, 미국의 출판계에서는 이미 80여 년 전에 엄청난 판매부수를 올리며 50년간 베스트셀러 1위를 지킬 정도로 전설적인 작품이었습니다. 1880년 루 윌리스가 발표한 <<벤허>>는 로마 제국을 배경으로 유대 청년 벤허와 청년 예수의 .운명을 날줄과 씨줄로 묶어 신앙의 근본적인 질문을 던지는 종교소설이요 대하 역사소설이라 할 수 있습니다. <<벤허>>는 종교소설 이라는 엄숙한 테마 위에 전차 경주라는 스펙타클과 남녀의 로맨스를 잘 버무려 대중소설의 성공적인 케이스가 되었습니다. <<벤허>>는 교황 레오 13세에게 축성을 받았으며 국내에서도 수많은 기독교 신자들이 탐독하는 소설입니다.
