The public are, in general, very ready to adopt the opinion, that he who has pleased them in one peculiar mode of composition, is, by means of that very talent, rendered in capable on the part of the public, towards the artificer of their pleasures, when they attempt to enlarge their means of amusing, may be seen in the censures usually passed by vulgar criticism upon actors or artifists who venture to change the character of their efforts, that, in so doing, they may enlarge the scale of their art.

월터 스콧(Walter Scott)은 스코틀랜드 태생의 영국 작가로<최후의 음유시인의 노래>, <마미온>, <호수의 여인>의 3대 서사시로 유명합니다. 1814년 익명으로 역사소설 <웨이벌리 Waverly>를 발표했는데 크게 호평을 받았습니다. 이후 익명으로 계속 소설을 발표했으며 1819년 <아이반호>를 출간했습니다.
