1951년 초반까지 "South Pacific" 뮤지컬의 열풍 속에서도 굳굳이 버티면서 또 다른 뮤지컬 앨범을 히트시킨 것은 뮤지컬 아가씨와 건달들(Guys and Dolls) 의 Original Cast 앨범입니다. 1950년 12월 3일 녹음되었고, 1951년 1월 8일 Decca에서 발매가 되면서 3월 17일 드디어 남태평양의 독주를 뚫고 빌보드 앨범차트 1위를 차지했네요. (처음부터 LP 및 78rpm 등으로 동시 제작됨)

뮤지컬 아가씨와 건달들은 Frank Loesser의 작곡, 각색으로 브로드웨이에 1950년 11월 24일 초연된 이래 1201회의 공연을 이어가면서 토니상을 수상한 명작이며, 이후 여러 차례의 리바이벌 된 것은 물론 1955년에는 말론 브란도, 프랑크 시나트라 주연의 영화로도 제작이 되어 히트한 바 있습니다.

2000년 6월 27일, Decca Broadway에서는 뮤지컬 50주년을 기념하는 CD(159112)를 발매하게 되는데, 오리지널 자켓사진을 그대로 차용한 것 처럼 여러가지 판본 CD 가운데 유일한 공식앨범이라고 할 수 있고, 오리지널 넘버 외에 보너스 트랙을 수록하고 있어 매력적이며, 다행이 국내에서도 판매를 하고 있어서 소개해 봅니다.

또 하나의 영화 OST 앨범이 빌보드 앨범차트 1위를 강타했네요. 다작 감독인 리처드 소프가 레드 스켈튼, 프레드 아스테어를 주연으로 하여 만든 뮤지컬 영화 "Three Little Words" 의 사운드트랙 앨범이 무려 11주간이나 롱런하면서 히트대열에 합류를 하게 됩니다.  

다소 민망스런 포스터를 보니 저 여자분, 리듬체조 쪽으로 진출하셔도 될 듯 ㅎㅎㅎ. 특이한 것은 음악을 작곡한 분이 Andre Previn과 Harry Ruby인데, 앙드레 프레빈은 후일 정통 클래식 지휘자로서 대성을 하게 되지요. 1950년이 아무래도 LP의 태동기이다 보니 이 앨범 역시 당시 빌보드지 광고를 보니까 78rpm, 33 1/3rpm, 45rpm으로 동시에 출시한다고 되어 있더군요. 수록곡도 이전 시기의 전통인 8곡에서 10곡으로 확대가 된 것을 바야흐로 매체의 교체시기임을 실감할 수 있습니다.

현재 CD로 발매되어 있는 버전으로는 2004년 5월 11일 Rhino Handmade 레이블에서 발매된 "Three Little Words (1950 Movie Soundtrack)" 앨범이 있습니다. 오리지널 10곡 외에도 수록곡을 대폭 확장하여 27개의 트랙으로 뮤지컬 영화의 분위기를 흠뻑 느낄 수 있는 좋은 앨범입니다.

한국전쟁이 발발하던 1950년 5월 초순부터 9월까지 12주간 빌보드 앨범차트 1위를 차지한 것은 영화 "Young Man With A Horn" 의 삽입곡을 발췌해 발표된 Doris Day 노래, Harry James 트럼펫 피처링의 앨범이 차지했습니다. 아직 남태평양 뮤지컬음반의 영향권인 가운데에서도 1950년의 남은 주간인 5/13~5/27, 7/1, 7/29~8/5, 8/26~9/30 에서 모두 1위를 차지, 1950년 1위앨범 리스트를 단촐하게 만들어 버렸네요.

영화 "Young Man With A Horn"는 마이클 커티즈 각독, 커크 더글라스, 로렌 바콜 주연으로 재즈 뮤지션 Bix Beiderbecke의 일대기를 그린 전기드라마 영화였는데, Doris Day는 여기에 비중있는 조연으로 출연하기도 했습니다. 위 앨범은 8개의 곡만을 뽑아 수록한 것으로 엄밀한 의미에서 공식적인 영화 OST라고 할 수는 없으며 실제 1954년 영화 OST가 위 수록곡을 포함하여 따로 발매되기도 합니다만 정작 보다 사랑을 받은 것은 먼저 출시된 까닭에 위 앨범이었지요.

현재 CD로 발매된 버전으로는 오리지널 자켓사진을 그대로 사용하여 1999년 6월 15일 Sony 에서 발매된 "Young Man with a Horn [Extra tracks][Original recording remastered][Soundtrack]" 앨범이 판매되고 있습니다. 오리지널 8곡에, 영화의 공식 OST에 수록된 추가곡까지 합해 13개 트랙으로 확장이 되었기에 본 앨범과 영화 OST 모두를 담았다고 생각해도 되겠네요. (CD의 자켓사진은 위 사진과 동일)

1950년 6월, "남태평양"의 기세를 누르고 빌보드 앨범차트 1위를 차지한 음반은, 누구나 한번쯤 보았던 디즈니의 12번째 애니메이션 신데렐라의 OST 앨범입니다. 같은 해 2월 영화가 극장 개봉을 해서 큰 성공을 거두었기에 OST 앨범 역시 발매와 함께 무난한 성공을 거두었었네요. 여러 차례 싱글차트를 넘나들던 Paul J. Smith, Oliver Wallace 작곡의 "A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes", "Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo" 등의 수록곡은 지금도 어린이들의 동심을 자극하는 명곡들입니다. (자켓사진은 1957년 WDL 4007 LP의 것을 차용함)

현재 CD버전으로 구할 수 있는 앨범으로는 2005년 4월 Walt Disney Records에서 발매된 "Cinderella Soundtrack Special Edition" 이 가장 정확한 복원으로 보여 소개드립니다. 기존 오리지널 8곡 외에 보너스 트랙을 포함하여 14트랙으로 구성이 되어 있으며 신데렐라 애니를 가장 잘 표현한 자켓으로 바뀌어서 출시가 되었네요. 애니메이션 DVD 외에도 하나쯤 소장할 만한 앨범입니다.
