Viet Thanh Nguyen의 {Nothing Ever Dies}는 베트남 전쟁에 관한 논픽션이다. 서양인도, 베트남 토박이도 아닌 저자. 10년의 취재. 한국의 입장도 다룬다. 읽어보고 나서 글을 쓰려 했는데 판권이 아직 살아 있다길래 간단히 적는다. (책이 도착하려면 일주일은 더 기다려야 한다. {뉴요커}에 실린 짧은 소개글을 읽자마자 주문했다.)
저자는 베트남에서 태어나 어린 시절 전쟁 때문에 미국으로 이민했다. 베트남을 알리기 위한 비영리 블로그 http://diacritics.org/를 운영하고 있다. 작년에 낸 첫 장편소설 {The Sympathizer}로 2016년 퓰리처상을 탔다. 주인공은 혼혈에 스파이. 정체성의 문제, 내면의 분열을 다루었을 것 같다. 논픽션과 소설 모두 번역되면 좋을 것이다.
