'제1장 가축과 작물의 변이'의 첫 문장의 원문이다. 인간이 기르는 동물이나 식물의 변종이나 아변종에 속하는 개체들 사이의 차이가 자연 상태의 한 종이나 변종에 속하는 개체들 사이의 차이보다 더 크다는 내용.
그런데 이 책은 위의 내용을 이렇게 번역했다.
"옛날부터 우리가 키워왔던 동식물들의 변종이나 아변종에 속한 개체들을 보면 자연 상태의 종이나 변종에 속한 개체들과 마찬가지로 그들이 서로 매우 다르다는 생각이 든다."
한 변종에 속하는 개체들 사이의 차이가 자연 상태나 인간이 사육, 재배하는 상태에서나 마찬가지라고 읽을 수밖에 없는 문장이다. 원문과는 반대로 번역했다. 위의 원문은 1판인데, 혹시나 싶어 6판을 확인해 봤다.

앞이 좀 바뀌었으나 뜻에는 변화가 없다.
