(남자) 어른들을 위한 동화가 아닐까 싶다. 15세 소년이 도쿄의 집으로부터 가출해서 겪는 '환상적' 이야기를 들려준다. 여러 층위의 얘기들이 섞여 있으며 상징들을 잘 사용했고 사건의 전개가 빨라서 매우 재미있게 읽었다. 요즘 영화 '오딧세이' 때문에 모험 여행기가 핫한데, 이 책도 일종의 모험 여행기-성장기로 읽을 수 있겠다. 읽으면서 번역가가 참 번역을 잘 했다고 생각했다. 문장도 잘 읽히고 대화와 등장 인물들이 살아 있다.
하루키를 이전에도 읽었으므로(<도시와 그 불확실한 벽>), 다른 소설의 장치-주제들이 자꾸 생각난다. 그림자 얘기라든지, 원래 하나였던 몸의 절반을 찾아 헤맨다는 얘기는 뭔가를 기대하게 만들지만, 이 소설에서 하루키는 더 이상 이 주제를 밀고 나가지는 않는다.
'카프카'는 일본어로 '可·不可'로 쓸 수도 있다고 한다. '가능-불가능'의 뜻을 가지므로 다양한 의미로 해석될 수 있는 이름이라고, 하루키는 이후 작가의 말에서 얘기한다. 소설에는 여러 황당한 얘기들이 섞여 있지만 별로 이상하게 읽히지 않는다. (이제 하루키에게 익숙해진 것인가.) 엄청난 철학이 들어 있는 대작이라고 할 수는 없겠지만, 읽는 재미의 기준으로 별 다섯을 준다.

So Nakata lived a contented life in the small apartment his brother provided, receiving his monthly subsidy, using his special bus pass, going to the local park to chat with the cats. This little corner of Nakano became his new world. Just like dogs and cats, he marked off his territory, a boundary line beyond which, except in unusual circumstances, he never ventured. As long as he stayed there he felt safe and content. No dissatisfactions, no anger at anything. No feelings of loneliness, anxieties about the future, or worries that his life was difficult or inconvenient. Day after day, for more than ten years, this was his life, leisurely enjoying whatever came along. (p. 199)
"A revelation leaps over the borders of the everyday. A life without revelation is no life at all. What you need to do is move from reason that observes to reason that acts. That’s what’s critical." (p. 255)
