It seems to me that there are severe discrepancies between what we consciously feel, concerning the flow of time, and what our (marvellously accurate) theories assert about the reality of the physical world. These discrepancies must surely be telling us something deep about the physics that presumably must actually underlie our conscious perceptions--assuming (as I believe) that what underlies these perceptions can indeed be understood in relation to some appropriate kind of physics. At least it seems to be clearly the case that whatever physics is operating, it must have an essentially time-asymmetrical ingredient, i.e. it must make a distinction between the past and the future. 왜 시간대칭적인 물리법칙들이 우리가 인식하는 시간의 흐름과, 현재를 기준으로 과거와 미래를 만드는가? 보통 엔트로피를 이에 대한 답으로 많이 얘기하지만, 펜로즈는 그렇게 간단히 넘어가지 않는다. 낮은 엔트로피에서 시간을 과거로 돌려도 높은 엔트로피를 얻는다는 것이다. 위상공간을 이용한 논증이다. 그러니 시간의 흐름은 엔트로피의 증가 때문이라고 얘기하지 말자. 즉, 과거와 미래, 또는 시간의 방향은 엔트로피가 증가하는 방향이 아니다.
