6~7세때의 게리무어

게리무어는 1952년 4월 4일 북아일랜드의 벨페스트(Belfast)에서 태어났다. 다른 많은 음악가들처럼 게리무어도 처음에는 엘비스 프레슬리, 비틀즈 등을 들어며 락켄롤에 관심을 갖기 시작했다.  60년대 중반에 고향에서 있었던 지미 헨드릭스와 존 마얄의 블루스브레이커의 공연을 보고 게리 무어는 블루스의 깊은 세계에 눈을 뜨게 되었다. 피터 그린과 같은 유명한 연주가의 블루스 기타연주는 게리 무어의 초기 재능에 불을 붙였으며 곧 그는 10대 음악신동으로 유명해졌다. 사실 게리 무어의 음악가로서의 경력을 키워준 사람은 피터 그린 자신이었으며, 무어는 1995년에 '그린을 위한 블루스' 앨범을 발표하여 그에게 진 빚을 멋지게 갚았다.

주목해야할 게리의 첫 밴드는 3인조 스키드 로우다. 1970년에 CBA와 레코드 계약을 맺었으며 그전에 게리는 더블린으로 이주해 스키드 로우의 보컬을 맡게된 필 라이놑(Phil Lynott)와 두터운 친분을 맺게 된다. 게리는 스키드 로우 밴드이름으로 3장의 앨범을 냈는데, 올맨 브라더즈 밴드와 마운틴 밴드의 식전 밴드로 미국 투어를 갔았는데 후에 밴드는 해산하고 게리는 솔로로 독립한다. 그러나 곧바로 Thin Lizzy의 기타리스트였던 에릭 벨을 대신한 기타리스트로 필 라이놑과 결합한다. 후에도 Thin Lizzy와는 결별과 재결합을 반복한다.
