어머니가 갑자기 딸에게 달려가서 뺨을 때리려 했다. 재빨리 피한 쉬잔은 다시 방갈로 아래 그늘로 들어가 버렸다. 어머니는 푸념을 늘어놓기 시작했다.

마당 주위 둔덕에 어머니가 붉은 칸나를 심은 것은 이번이 세 번째였다. 매번 가뭄 때문에 시들어 버렸지만 어머니는 고집을 꺾지 않았다

쉬잔은 조제프가 헤엄치러 가자고 부르길 기다렸다. 미리 방갈로 그늘 밖으로 나설 마음은 없었다. 그냥 기다리는 편이 나았다. 조제프와 함께 있으면 어머니가 소리를 덜 질렀다.

언젠가 저 길을 달려온 자동차가 방갈로 앞에 멈춰 서는 날이 오리라. 그 차에서 남자 혹은 여자가 내려 조제프나 쉬잔에게 무언가를 묻거나 도움을 청할 것이다. 어떤 종류의 정보를 물어볼지는 막연했다. 람에서 캄을 거쳐 도시로 이어지는 비포장도로는 이곳 평야를 지나는 유일한 길이었다. 그러니 길을 잃을 위험은 없다. 그래도 미처 준비하지 못한 일이 일어날 수 있지 않은가. 쉬잔은 희망을 버리지 않았다. 언젠가 다리 옆에서 그녀를 본 남자가 차를 세울지도 모른다. 그리고 그녀가 마음에 들어 도시로 함께 가지 않겠냐고 물어볼지 누가 아는가.

그나마 둘이 함께 있으면 가까이 오지 않았다. 그냥 소리만 질렀다. 방조 제방이 무너진 뒤로 어머니는 무슨 말이든 하려고 하면 거의 매번 소리부터 질렀다. 전에는 어머니가 화를 내도 자식들은 별로 걱정하지 않았다. 하지만 제방이 무너진 이후 어머니는 병이 났고, 의사 말로는 자칫 죽을 뻔했다. 이미 세 번 발작이 일어났고, 의사 말로는 그 세 번 모두 치명적일 수 있었다. 어머니가 잠깐 소리 지르는 것은 괜찮지만 너무 오래는 안 된다고, 화를 내다가 발작이 일어날 수 있다고 했다.

어머니가 품고 있는 그토록 깊은 원한은 아주 서서히, 한 해 한 해, 하루하루 쌓여 온 것일 수밖에 없다. 한 가지 이유만 있는 게 아니다. 천 가지 이유가 있다. 무너진 방조 제방, 세상의 불의, 냇물에서 헤엄치는 두 자식의 모습도 그중에 포함되었다.

매번 지난 시절의 완벽함에 또 다른 완벽함이 더해졌고, 남편에게는 새로운 장점이, 당시 생활의 편안함에는 또 다른 면, 즉 호사스러움이 더해졌다. 조제프와 쉬잔은 어머니의 말에 의심을 품게 되었다.

오랫동안 포기하지 않고 기다렸다. 어머니는 그런 종류의 기다림에 익숙했다. 그런 기다림은, 어쩌면 그런 기다림만이 어머니를 세상의 권력들과, 즉 어머니의 모든 것을 쥐고 있는 토지국이나 은행과 이어 주는 막연한 끈이었다.

어머니에게 가장 참기 힘든 것은 자식들이 아무 생각 없이 평야의 삶을 즐기는 광경이었다. "정말 이상해졌어." 쉬잔이 말했다. 조제프도 그렇게 생각했다.

"축음기를 팔아서 새 말을 사면 보름 후에 새 축음기를 살 수 있을 거야."
"축음기 없이 지내는 보름 동안 난 여길 떠나 버릴 거야."
쉬잔은 포기했다.

어머니는 식사를 끝내고 조제프와 쉬잔이 먹는 것을 바라보았다. 먹고 있는 자식들 앞에 앉아 몸짓 하나하나를 지켜보았다. 어머니는 쉬잔이, 그리고 조제프도 더 자랐으면 했다. 아직 그럴 수 있을 것 같았다. 조제프는 곧 스무 살이었고, 어머니보다 훨씬 컸다.

"돈이 행복을 만들진 않는답니다. 생각하시는 것과 달라요." 조 씨가 무언가를 아련하게 떠올리는 표정으로 말했다.
어머니는 늘 부르짖었다. "행복을 만드는 건 오로지 돈뿐이야. 돈이 있어도 행복하지 않다고 믿는 건 어리석은 인간들뿐이지." 그리고 덧붙였다. "돈이 많으면 계속 현명하도록 애써야 해." 조제프는 더 단호했다. 돈이 행복을 만든다고, 군말이 필요 없다고 했다. 조 씨의 리무진만 있으면 조제프는 행복할 수 있었다.

그런데 아버지에게는 아들 역시 부당한 운명의 희생자라는 생각이 단 한 번도 들지 않았다. 아들은 그저 자신에게 가해진 부당한 운명일 뿐이었다.

그날 조 씨는 쉬잔에게서 얻고 싶었던 사랑을 마음속에서 떠나보냈다.

문을 열기만 하면 된다. 아직 어떤 남자도 저 문 뒤에서 그녀를 본 적이 없었다. 하지만 어차피 숨겨 두라고 만들어진 게 아니다. 오히려 보이라고, 그래서 세상으로, 남자가 속한, 저 사람 조 씨가 속한 세상으로 나가라고 만들어졌다.

쉬잔이 문을 열려는데, 마음대로 보라고 세상에 자기를 바치려는데 바로 그 순간에 세상이 그녀에게 매음을 시킨 것이다.

잠시 동안 조 씨의 병들고 추한 눈길이 자신의 몸을 파고들 수 있도록 욕실 문을 열어 준 덕분에 지금 축음기가 테이블에 놓였다. 축음기는 완벽하게 건강했고, 완벽하게 아름다웠다. 쉬잔은 스스로 축음기를 가질 자격이 있다고, 그리고 저 축음기를 조제프에게 줄 자격이 있다고 생각했다. 축음기류의 물건은 조제프의 것이 되는 게 당연했다. 자기는 혼자만의 능력으로 조 씨에게서 축음기를 얻어낸 것으로 충분했다.
