Then the Lord said to Joshua, "Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Take the whole army with you, and go up and attack Ai. For I have delivered into your hands the king of Ai, his people, his city and his land.
2
You shall do to Ai and its king as you did to Jericho and its king, except that you may carry off their plunder and livestock for yourselves. Set an ambush behind the city."
3
So Joshua and the whole army moved out to attack Ai. He chose thirty thousand of his best fighting men and sent them out at night
4
with these orders: "Listen carefully. You are to set an ambush behind the city. Don’t go very far from it. All of you be on the alert.
- P120

5
I and all those with me will advance on the city, and when the men come out against us, as they did before, we will flee from them.
6
They will pursue us until we have lured them away from the city, for they will say, ‘They are running away from us as they did before.’ So when we flee from them,
7
you are to rise up from ambush and take the city. The Lord your God will give it into your hand.
- P121

The Lord tells Joshua not to fear and to take over Ai. He instructs Joshua to set an ambush behind the city.
Joshua and the soldiers prepare, choosing
thirtythousand warriors to go by night. Joshua sends them to hide between Betheland Ai while he stays with the rest of the army, ready to draw out Ai‘s troops. - P121

When Israel goes to fight the city of Ai for the second time, the whole armygoes up, and the result is very different. Joshua was dismayed by the failureof the first attack, but when he seeks God‘s instructions this time, he is toldnot to be afraid or discouraged. Joshua is assured that Israel will secure avictory just as they defeated Jericho. Israel will even be allowed to keep theplunder and livestock.  - P122

When we experience failure in our lives, we may bediscouraged and afraid to try again. However, when we seek the Lord andfollow His lead, we should be confident that He can provide an entirelydifferent outcome because we are not operating in worldly ways; we arewalking in the ways of God. - P122

Dear Jesus, when we hear Your voice, help us to obey quickly andwholeheartedly.  - P123

Teach us to trust Your loving truth and never hesitate as wefollow You. In Your name, amen. - P123

What Jesus Says About Himself
First, we must recognize that Jesus does not state blatantly, "I am God," butHe reveals it in two ways: first, through His relationship with the first personof the Trinity, God the Father, and second, through His relationship with thethird person of the Trinity, God the Holy Spirit.  - P168

20Achan replied, "It is true! I have sinned against the Lord, the God of Israel. This is what I have done - P114

24Then Joshua, together with all Israel, took Achan son of Zerah, the silver, the robe, the gold bar, his sons and daughters, his cattle, donkeys and sheep, his tent and all that he had, to the Valley of Achor.

25Joshua said, "Why have you brought this trouble on us? The Lord will bring trouble on you today." Then all Israel stoned him, and after they had stoned the rest, they burned them.

- P115

26Over Achan they heaped up a large pile of rocks, which remains to this day. Then the Lord turned from his fierce anger. Therefore that place has been called the Valley of Achor ever since.

- P115

Joshua has Israel come forward by tribe, clan, and family. Achan is identified;he admits he took a robe, silver, and gold and hid them in his tent. The itemsare recovered. Joshua and Israel stone and burn Achan and his family. Theyheap rocks over him and call the place the Valley of Achor. Then the Lord turnsfrom His fierce anger. - P115

When God reveals that Achan is the sinner among the tribes, Joshua addresses Achan as his son and calls him to give glory and honor to God. Then, Achan is to confess what he has done - P116

. Many of us do not enjoy confronting others. It can be uncomfortable, especially in community settings. However, ignoring sin is costly. Sin can spread like a disease, causing even more corruption. - P116

Today, when people encounter sin in the church, they might join a different church that seems to have less trouble or avoid churches altogether. But this passage reminds us that we should not be reluctant to confront those whose lifestyles are undermining the holiness to which we are called. We cannot afford to look the other way. - P116

In this story, we see the insidious and pervasive nature of sin and its severeconsequences. Some may consider the capital punishment of Achan and hisfamily too severe. However, we must remember that the sin of Achan hadalready affected more than one person. His greed had cascading effects. Itnot only affected him and his family but also caused the death of thirty-sixpeople at the battle of Ai. The Israelites died in what should have been aneasy victory for God‘s people.  - P116

We should remember this story when we aretempted to sin. We may think that our sins only affect one person,
should recognize that they can also negatively impact our families, church-es, and even our possessions.
but we - P116

Heavenly Father, I pray that You would grant wisdom to Your people. I pray that church leaders would shepherd their communities with grace and integrity. - P116

Give them the discernment and courage to recognize and confront the sins that threaten to harm Your people. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen. - P116
