Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional.

Foreword

One runner told of a mantra his older brother, also arunner, had taught him which he‘s pondered ever sincehe began running. Here it is: Pain is inevitable. Suffer-ing is optional. Say you‘re running and you start tothink, Man this hurts, I can‘t take it anymore. The hurtpart is an unavoidable reality, but whether or not youcan stand any more is up to the runner himself. Thispretty much sums up the most important aspect ofmarathon running.

I didn‘t go to sleep right away. I lay there andthought how life was like a Littmus Lozenge, howthe sweet and the sad were all mixed up togetherand how hard it was to separate them out. It wasconfusing.
"Daddy!" I shouted.
After a minute, he opened the door and raisedhis eyebrows at me.
"What was that word you said? The word thatmeant sad?"
"Melancholy," he said.
"Melancholy," I repeated. I liked the way itsounded, like there was music hidden somewhereinside it. - P126

"You asked for a whole library?"
"A small one," Miss Franny nodded. "I wanted a little house full of nothing but books and I wanted to share them, too. And I got my wish. My father built me this house, the very one we are sitting in now. And at a very young age, I became a librarian. Yes ma‘am." - P46

The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane

Someone will come. Someone will come for you. But first you must open your mind.
