새움판 이방인에서는 뫼르소의 살인동기를 "깔끔하게 정리" 하였다고 한다.
그렇게 간단하게, 이방인은 일반인이 된 것인가?
카뮈는 뫼르소가 소위 "사이코패스"라거나 "바보"로 그리지 않았다.
그러나 그저 정당방위로 살인을 했는데 그저 말주변이 없어서 사회로부터 오해받은 억울한 일반인일 수도 없다.
카뮈는 레뜨랑제의 영역본 더스트레인저 서문에서 이렇게 설명하였다.
I summarized The Stranger a long time ago, with a remark I admit was highly
paradoxical: "In our society any man who does not weep at his mother's funeral
runs the risk of being sentenced to death." I only meant that the hero of my
book is condemmed because he does not play the game. In this respect, he is
foreign to the society in which he lives; he wanders, on the fringe, in the
suburbs of private, solitary, sensual life. And this is why some readers have
been tempted to look upon him as a piece of social
wreckage.
A much more accurate idea of the character, or, at least one much closer to
the author's intentions, will emerge if one asks just how Meursault doesn't play
the game. The reply is a simple one; he refuses to lie. To lie is not only to
say what isn't true. It is also and above all, to say more than is true, and, as
far as the human heart is concerned, to express more than one feels. This is
what we all do, every day, to simplify life. He says what he is, he refuses to
hide his feelings, and immediately society feels threatened. He is asked, for
example, to say that he regrets his crime, in the approved manner. He replies
that what he feels is annoyance rather than real regret. And this shade of
meaning condemns him.
For me, therefore, Meursault is not a piece of social wreckage, but a poor
and naked man enamored of a sun that leaves no shadows. Far from being bereft of
all feeling, he is animated by a passion that is deep because it is stubborn, a
passion for the absolute and for truth. This truth is still a negative one, the
truth of what we are and what we feel, but without it no conquest of ourselves
or of the world will ever be possible.
One would therefore not be much mistaken to read The Stranger as the story of
a man who, without any heroics, agrees to die for the truth. I also happen to
say, again paradoxically, that I had tried to draw in my character the only
Christ we deserve. It will be understood, after my explanations, that I said
this with no blasphemous intent, and only with the slightly ironic affection an
artist has the right to feel for the characters he has created.
그리고 새움판 이방인의 역자도 "사실 나는 많은 부분 영문판을 참조하고 있다. 두 언어에 어순 차이가 없고, 카뮈가 서문을 써준, 영문판인 만큼..."이라고 설명한 만큼 이 서문을 보았을 것으로 추정할 수 있다.
뫼르소는 카뮈에 따르면, 거짓말을 하지 않는다. 자신이 느끼는 것, 관찰한 것, 생각하는 것에 대해 거짓말을 하지 않는다. 그래서 법정에서도 태양 때문이라고 증언하는 것이다. 그게 사실이기 때문에. 뫼르소가 이런 말을 허투로 헛말이 나왔다고는 생각하지 않는다. 그의 캐릭터 자체가 "의미가 없는 말은 하지 않는" 캐릭터이고 카뮈가 강조하듯, 일반인인 우리가 생을 단순화하기 위해 진실된 감정을 숨기거나 과장하고 벌거벗은 진실을 각종 논리와 인과를 동원하여 설명하는 것과 달리 그는 그렇게 하지 않는다.
적극적으로 "agrees to die for truth"하는 존재이지 사회라든지 사법제도의 피해자가 아닌 것이다.
뫼르소에게는 "a passion that is deep because it is stubborn, a passion for the absolute and for truth"가 전부이다.
그리고 카뮈는 바로 이어 "This truth is still a negative one"이라고 하며 이 negative truth를 마주볼 때에만 우리 자신과 세계를 진정 극복할 수 있다고 한다. 이 negative truth가 바로 부조리, 뫼르소가 태양빛에 혼란스러워 아랍인을 쏘았다는 그 우연이고 엄마의 장례식에서 울지 않았기 때문에 사형을 당하게 된 그 부조리인 것이라고 생각한다. 아이가 어른이 되면서 세상이 흑과백으로 나눌 수 없다는 것을 깨닫고 성장하는 것처럼 바로 그 부조리를 마주해야 진정한 실존적 자유를 누릴수 있을 것이다.
카뮈는 위 서문에서 To lie is not only to say what isn't true. It is also and above all, to say more than is true라고 하였다. 진실이 아닌 것을 말하는 것만이 아니라 진실에 덧붙여 말하는 것도 거짓말이다, 라고. 뫼르소와 카뮈는 사실을 과장하는 것도 거짓이라고 본 것이다. 그렇다면 예를 들면 지금까지 읽은 이방인은 이방인이 아니다, 라는 것은 진실이 아닌 것을 말한 것인가 진실에 덧붙여 말한 것인가...?
